Introduction

Manjula Naik is from Mareguddi village, Jamakhandi Taluk, Bagalkot Dist., Karnataka State. She is an active member of Shri Yallamma Devi Unnathi SHG. Her total savings in the SHG till March 2018 is Rs. 2750/- and she has taken internal loan of Rs. 10,500/- which has been repaid completely. She participated in many capacity building trainings and livelihood workshop organized by the project under IFCU displacement project, which enhanced her knowledge about livelihood promotion and the available opportunities.

Her husband, skilled in motor winding and welding work, was in no position to purchase welding machine for himself and had to depend on others. Although Manjula discussed her situation in the SHG meeting, she could not avail loan as some other members had applied for the same. Meanwhile, the project team asked SHGs to recommend beneficiaries for livelihood loan from IFCU displacement project and Yellamma Devi SHG unanimously recommended Manjula Naik. The project team helped her to prepare a business plan for the livelihood activity and sent it for approval. Her need was assessed and approved by the management and she received INR. 10,000 as interest free loan and purchased one pre used welding machine to start own business. Her husband is now able to take more work and hence, earn more income for the family. At present they earn an extra income of around INR. 6,000 per month. Although Manjula’s husband initially tried to stop her from joining the SHG, both of them are very happy and thankful for the financial assistance provided to them.
